NativeLingo vs Language Reactor, a reading alternative to subtitles

Language Reactor is built for Netflix and YouTube subtitles, while NativeLingo works on everything you read, and many people use both.

In short
  • Language Reactor is for watching, and NativeLingo is for reading.
  • NativeLingo picks words for your level, whereas with subtitles you choose them.
  • They don’t clash, because NativeLingo skips video players.

Two different jobs

The Language Reactor Chrome extension adds dual subtitles to Netflix and YouTube, so you watch in the language you are learning and read the translation underneath.

NativeLingo works on articles, news, forums and docs in your own language instead, swapping a few words into the language you learn at your level. That makes it less a Language Reactor alternative than a companion for the rest of your day.

Who picks the words

With subtitles, every line is at the level of the show, and below B1 that means a lot of unknown words at native speed.

NativeLingo picks single words from A1 to C1 and leaves the rest of the page in your language, so you never get a whole sentence you can’t follow.

What happens to the words

In Language Reactor you save the words you want to keep, while NativeLingo saves every word you met and brings it back in a typed daily review.

The review is spaced, so a word comes back just before you would forget it, which on most days takes a minute or two.

Using both

Use Language Reactor for the evening episode and NativeLingo for the reading you do the rest of the day.

They don’t get in each other’s way either, because NativeLingo skips video players and leaves subtitles as they are.
